Eco-Friendly Facts

What is eco-friendly cleaning? Ask any school aged child what "eco-friendly" means and the response will center on saving the earth. Be it recycling, conservation or healthy living, this buzzword is all about lessening our impact on the environment.

It should come as no surprise that even some of our cleaning methods can be described as eco-friendly.

What does "eco-friendly" really mean (in relation to cleaning)?
There is no hard or fast definition for "eco-friendly" because eco-friendly is a concept not a thing. Eco-friendly can be viewed as a process.

  • Eco-friendly cleaning is a term that describes a growing trend toward using environmentally-friendly ingredients and chemicals for household, manufacturing and industrial cleaning.
  • Eco-friendly cleaning methods and products avoid the use of harsh and toxic cleaning products.  These harsh products often contain toxic chemicals, some of which release fumes which can cause breathing or skin problems, among other adverse effects.
  • Eco-friendly cleaning can also describe the way residential and industrial cleaning products are manufactured, packaged and distributed. If the manufacturing process is environmentally-friendly and the products are biodegradable, then the term "eco-friendly" may apply.

Eco-friendly cleaning is more than switching a few products or equipment. It is about effective cleaning to create healthier buildings and at the same time reduce environmental impact.

Eco-friendly cleaning is an overall approach to cleaning that combines eco-friendly products, equipment, tools and procedures which reduce the impact of cleaning materials on the health of building occupants and on the environment.

Any building, whether commercial or residential can benefit from an eco-friendly building cleaning program.  In fact, considering how much more time is spent in our home environment compared to the work environment, an eco-friendly cleaning program for our home should be a top priority.
